2015 Staff in Storage Training & Development Retreat

Planning is currently underway for the Staff Retreat which will be held over two days in Melbourne CBD on 30th April and 1st May at the Marriott Hotel. This tailored event will be invaluable to staff working in the self storage industry as it includes presentations on marketing, sales, operations, legal and workshops with valued suppliers.

Concurrent sessions will be kept to a minimum with options given for the software and legal sessions. Ensure you are getting the most out of your software by having staff attend; they will hear the best tips and tricks regarding self storage software straight from the horse’s mouth.

All delegates will also be taught how to shoot, format and upload short videos by an award-winning photojournalist with 20 years’ experience in various international publications, Fairfax media and Murdoch Press. This valuable team building exercise will see staff obtain skills for promoting small businesses online.

Following this, a networking event will be held on the Thursday evening at Trunk restaurant (which is next door to the Marriott) with a three course dinner and drinks. Friday morning will kick off with breakfast with an expert to give staff the opportunity to ask those in the know their most pressing questions.

Speakers currently confirmed for the event include:
Ciaran Gribben – INXS Frontman
From humble beginnings growing up in Northern Island Ciaran has since become a Grammy nominated songwriter and worked with artists such as Madonna, Snow Patrol and Paul McCartney. With no classical training in music Ciaran saved up for his first guitar by harvesting potatoes. From this point on he focused all his time and energy on music and was able to ignore the political turmoil and violence engulfing his home. He managed to gain acceptance into the School of Music in Bangor and spent the next few years trying to establish a career through hard work and dedication. Ciaran’s story of growing up during ‘the troubles’ in Northern Ireland, not to mention a few life-threatening close calls, is an extraordinary and heart-warming journey, told with honesty, humour and pride that inspires us to never give up on our dreams.

Doris Zagdanski – The Cheerful Funeral Director
Doris graduated from Monash University, Melbourne and began her professional career as a high school teacher. Since the 1980’s Doris has worked almost exclusively in Funeral Service and is currently General Manager Corporate Projects with InvoCare – Australasia’s largest group of funeral providers. She is also serving as a divisional councillor for the Queensland branch of the Australian Funeral Directors Association. Doris wrote her first book on teenagers and grief in 1990 and has since created an identity as a well-known author, educator and trainer in the field of grief awareness. With seven books now published in her name she regularly presents as a keynote speaker and educator for a wide range of organisations. ‘Stuck for Words’ is Doris’ most popular seminar, based on her book by the same title and expertise in this field. She has created a tremendous reputation for this session and has presented it throughout Australia.

Jason Philactides – ReachLocal Australia
Jason is the Head of Channel Partnerships at ReachLocal Australia. Jason is an experienced marketing professional who specialises in creating strategies to help SME’s generate more profit from their marketing programmes as well as simplifying marketing intelligence decisions for businesses to help them grow. He has previously presented webinars to SSAA members in conjunction with Google.

Shirley McKinnon – Personality Based Sales Coach
Shirley McKinnon is an international author, speaker, master coach and business consultant. She is the founder of McKinnon Sales Centre Pty Ltd which trains managers and team leaders how to develop high performance teams. She has extensive business experience and seems to have a seventh sense for human nature. Her training has created a breakthrough, using experiential training to train teams and their managers to consistently exceed budget through new levels of peak performance. Shirley will teach you how to market to different customers based on their personality type.

Simone Hill – SSAA Australian Legal Council
Simone Hill is Australasia’s pre-eminent legal expert in contractual matters concerning self storage. A valuable member of the SSAA team Simone has been involved in the self storage industry for over 15 years. She has helped literally hundreds of SSAA members in dealing with interesting legal predicaments that arise when operating a self storage business, and is also a regular contributor to the Insider Magazine. Simone often presents at SSAA conventions and as a lawyer who speaks plain English you can understand, she is always highly regarded.

Temeike McLean – SSAA 2014 Manager of the Year
Temeike was employed by Storage King in May 2008 and became a store manager within a year. In 2011 she undertook the task of managing Storage King in Browns Plains. This was a store that had a reputation of being in a very difficult demographic area, one that was hidden in back streets with no street exposure and located in a very competitive market. Temeike successfully turned the store around, increasing the facilities occupancy rate by 30% and growth yield by approximately 15%. In 2011 when the Queensland floods hit Storage King in Rocklea, Temeike was instrumental in the clean-up, aiding customers and supporting staff. She has completed a Cert IV in Training and Assessment on her own accord in order to better train and mentor staff and has won the SSAA’s Manager of the Year Award. Temeike, who is known for being highly dedicated, extremely efficient, organised and motivated, will pass on some of her strategies for success in self storage.

The retreat is designed to provide an intensive 2 day program to motivate and inspire staff to work more effectively in their self storage roles.
